Minister dismisses nanny state suggestions

Intervention in family life from the government is acceptable, the children's minister insists in an interview with the Telegraph.

Margaret Hodge said it enables parents to do "the best for their children".

"You take home this little bundle of joy from the hospital and you don't know where to start. People want the state to help them," she said.

Her comments reflect the tone of a speech she will make to the Institute for Public Policy Research.
