About Us

The Stroke Association

The Stroke Association provides support to people who have had strokes, their families and carers. We campaign, educate and inform to increase knowledge of stroke at all levels of society. We run an information and education service, provide publications and welfare grants.

Our Dysphasia Support Service has almost 3,000 specially-trained volunteers and staff who work to improve communication skills in people who have lost their ability to speak, read or write after stroke.

Our Family Support Service is a visiting service which provides emotional support for the carers of people who have had a stroke and their families. It aims to prepare individuals for the changes they may have to make as a result of stroke.

The Stroke Association operates a National Helpline (0845 30 33 100) and an Information Service from our regional offices. The service is provided by trained staff who can answer questions from the public on a variety of topics concerning stroke. We publish a wide range of leaflets, booklets and other material.

We fund and promote research which will enhance knowledge both of the frequency, causes and outcome of stroke; and of the effectiveness of interventions aimed at stroke prevention, diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and care.

Prevention is an important area of our work. Stroke Awareness Week, held each year in October, is one way we highlight important messages about ways to prevent stroke. Our research will pave the way for the development of preventive strategies and new treatments targeted at people who have different types of strokes.

More than 400 Stroke Clubs are affiliated to The Stroke Association. Our Friends scheme gives members of the public the opportunity to find out more about stroke through attending stroke conferences, visiting research facilities around the country and participating in fundraising events. It also provides an opportunity to become more involved in our work.
