John Prescott's stance on tackling decay in Northern towns and cities has been criticised by the head of the government-sponsored Empty Homes Agency.

Jonathan Ellis, the chief executive of the independent charity, which compiles statistics on abandoned homes, said: "Five years ago we would have defended the demolition of every property currently proposed but just recently we have begun to get slightly concerned that demolition is the default position."
