The Energy Retail Association

Our industry

Choice through competition
The UK electricity industry provides one of the most efficient, safest and secure power supply systems in the world. Since the domestic energy market was introduced in 1998 the average bill has reduced by a third in real terms and around 50% of households have changed their gas and electricity supplier to benefit from cheaper prices.

The industry makes a significant contribution to our communities through donations, sponsorship and support in kind. Energy suppliers support education and youth employment initiatives, charities and caring organisations, and sponsorship of the performing arts, sport and recreation. People who are vulnerable, such as elderly, disabled or chronically sick customers are a priority concern for suppliers and a range of measures are offered to improve the support they receive from their gas or electricity company. Fuel poverty is a major issue for Government and suppliers are working with a range of government agencies to help address the needs of the fuel poor. For example, by helping low income customers to manage their bills better. Suppliers also provide advice and assistance on energy efficiency measures, including grants under the Energy Efficiency Commitment.
