Schools set for new powers

The Times reports today that the government's education plans will virtually scrap the role of local councils in running schools.

It says that headteachers and governors will be given virtually complete control of their budgets, while popular schools will find it easier to expand.

Meanwhile, teachers' leaders have welcomed a government drive to rejuvenate music education - as long as schools are given the funds and curriculum time to make it a reality.

The "music manifesto", drawn up by ministers and a coalition of 70 groups from the music industry and education, includes commitments ranging from greater access to free or subsidised instrumental tuition for young children to more help for the most talented young musicians to develop their careers.
