The Corporation of London The Corporation of London provides local government services for the City of London, one of the 33 local authority areas that contribute so much to the vibrancy of this most modern of capitals, and the world-beating heart of the global financial services industry. The Corporation provides the full range of focused and expert services its constituents expect, whether they be residents or from the City's hugely successful business community.
These functions seek to foster the continued development of the City as the heart of the leading international financial and business centre, whilst at the same time improving living, working and travelling conditions, enhancing the City's environment, and protecting its historic building and spaces.
In addition to serving the needs of its constituents, the Corporation is totally committed to working with neighbouring boroughs and businesses to maintain and advance the reputation of London as a whole. It also has an astonishing range of responsibilities that reach out beyond the City and are of benefit not only to the people of London but to the whole of the UK.
Business City The Corporation of London is committed to maintaining and enhancing the status of the City as the world's leading international financial and business centre through its policies and the high standard of its service provision. London is the heart of the world's financial business and the centre of financial innovation and information. Its supportive legal, regulatory and fiscal regimes are underpinned by a highly efficient technological infrastructure and an unrivalled concentration and variety of expert services. In addition to its financial and physical infrastructure and magnificent working environment, the City also benefits from dedicated and expert local government. The Corporation of London draws on over 800 years experience of supporting the financial infrastructure and providing the quality of service appropriate to a leading world centre.
History The City has a long and fascinating history - the Corporation itself is over 800 years old and, while fulfilling its role as a modern local authority, it respects and preserves its rich historical legacy. With its roots in medieval times, the Corporation of London is the oldest local authority in England. Even the Parliament at Westminster is based on the Corporation's Court of Common Council, which has been referred to as the 'Grandmother of Parliaments'. The Corporation operates through its Lord Mayor, Aldermen and members of the Court of Common Council elected by the residents and businesses of the City's 25 wards. The ancient civic offices of the Lord Mayor and Sheriffs are still an integral part of the modern Corporation, and traditions such as the Lord Mayor's Show and the Freedom of the City bring London's history to life.
Leisure & Heritage The City is not just about business and finance. Within the Square Mile are galleries, theatres, museums and concert halls to cater for all tastes. There is a wide range of sporting activity, a public leisure centre and of course the world-famous Barbican Centre. As well as being the third largest sponsor of the arts in the UK, The Corporation owns and cares for a number of historic buildings and monuments. The Corporation of London owns and runs four famous markets, Billingsgate, Leadenhall, Smithfield and Spitalfields. World-famous Billingsgate market is the UK's largest inland fish market. We are also the largest Port Health Authority in the UK, responsible for a district which extends for 150km along the Thames from Teddington to the outer Estuary.
Social Services The Corporation is committed to an extensive programme of activities designed to assist its neighbours to combat social deprivation so that they can benefit from the wealth which the City generates. We provide a range of services designed to promote the welfare of the population of the City of London, including residents, workers and visitors, patients attending St Bartholomew's hospital and people who are homeless.
Education Separate from its local education authority role, the Corporation runs three independent schools - the City of London School, the City of London School for Girls and the City of London Freemen's School, all of which regularly deliver excellent results.
Highways & Transport As well as actively promoting public transport, the Corporation seeks to keep traffic flowing, ease access and safe provision for vulnerable road users, effectively plan and manage the highway network and improve road safety and air quality. All these are vital to enhancing the City's reputation as the best place to do business.
