01. WELCOME TO THE AUTUMN ISSUE OF pH7
In this issue

Welcome to the party conference edition of pH7. This edition looks at food and fitness - and in particular the preliminary evidence that vitamin D may prevent diabetes in children. This story has very important implications on several levels. Childhood diabetes is a growing problem and the cost to the NHS is astronomical. If it is proven to be true, giving a supplement as simple as cod liver oil could have a major impact on children's health - and their long-term development as adults - slashing NHS costs as a consequence. And if so, not only does more research need to be undertaken, but the need to take action to conserve our fish stocks - devasted by over-fishing and rising mercury levels - becomes more urgent than ever.

* This edition also carries a guide to the health-related fringe meetings at this autumn's party conferences - which we hope will take some of the stress out of the process of negotiating the way between meetings. (Delegates should be aware that the list isselective, and although correct at time of going to press, details may be subject to change.)
