Public Policy Positions

As a large employer, Vauxhall has positions on many policies concerning the motor industry and working practices. The following are some of the issues we cover:

If you would like any further information about these, or any of our positions, please feel free to contact us.

End of Life Vehicle Directive

Vauxhall is actively working with the DTI on conditions relating to further regulations.

We will take back vehicles first registered from 1 July 2002 at no cost to the owner and ensure that certain conditions are met.

Future Fuels

Vauxhall have been producing LPG fuelled vehicles since 1996. In 2003, Vauxhall achieved record sales of 4000 vehicles.

Vauxhall is concerned about the lack of clarity following the Pre-Budget Report. It stated that the tax incentive on LPG fuelled will be reduced however, the extent is not yet known.

We are actively working with the LPGA and the Energy Savings Trust to promote the benefits of LPG fuelled vehicles. For more information on LPG please see our alternative fuel page.

Training and Skills

Vauxhall is working with the Learning and Skills Council to offer Vauxhall retailers training. At the Vauxhall College in Luton, we offer employees a variety of courses that further their skills and knowledge. We are also investing considerable resources in providing management and personal development training for our employees.

Employment Legislation

  • Information Directive
Vauxhall supports the directive that establishes the minimum requirement for communication and involvement in large firms. Vauxhall has established work place committees with the trade unions that meet on a regular basis and circulate information to the employees.

  • Equal Opportunities
Vauxhall aims to match its employees with that of the local community. We also aim to increase the number of women in management. We are confident that our current policies (covering all aspects of abuse, harassment, bullying, racism and victimisation) ensuring that all potential and currently employees are treated with respect and dignity. Our equal opportunities policy is being updated to reflect changes in the law, and in addition the company is rolling out disability awareness training to employees.

  • Stress
As holders of Investors in People, Vauxhall strives to help our employees in all aspects of their work life balance. Courses are available on time management to aid individuals in managing their workload. In addition, Vauxhall also employs a Chaplain who is available to talk about any issues of concern.

Future Product

  • Pedestrian Protection

The EU directive’s official journal was published in 2001 and states that:

    • From 1st October 2005 all new vehicle types will have to comply with two tests concerning protection against head injuries and leg injuries.
    • From 1st September 2010 a second set of tests will apply to all new vehicle types and to all new vehicles by 2015.

Vauxhall is pleased this study remained incorporated in the Directive, as was the case in the Industry Commitment.

  • Vehicle Excise Duty

In March 2001 the government introduced a new CO2 based system for company car system. VED is graduated on CO2 specifications is important advantage for LPG fuelled cars.

  • Car Taxation

Vauxhall is supportive of the current car taxation regime in the UK. We welcome it as an example of best practice for the rest of Europe.
