SANE, the mental health charity, today commented on the case of Sarah Lawson, whose father has pleaded guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility. Sarah, with a long history of depression and attempted suicide, died following discharge from hospital despite having tried to kill herself.

IDENTIFICATION OF SCHIZOPHRENIA GENE
Scientists from the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy at the Julius Maximilians University in Wuerzburg, in Germany, have announced the identification of a gene mutation that they say helps to cause a particularly severe form of the schizophrenia in families - catatonic schizophrenia.

INDEPENDENT INQUIRY INTO CARE AND TREATMENT OF JOHN PICCOLO
SANE, the mental health charity, today commented on the independent inquiry into the care and treatment provided for John Piccolo by North Essex Health Authority. Mr Piccolo was receiving treatment for depression when he shot his son Darren Piccolo, his ex-girlfriend Jane Smith, her boyfriend Martyn Cass and himself in September 1998. Martyn Cass and John Piccolo died as a result of the shootings.

JOHN BOWIS JOINS SANE'S BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Former Minister for Health John Bowis OBE, has accepted the offer from SANE's Chairman Ian Hay Davison to join the charity's Board of Directors.
Self Portrait, 24 May 1991 (above) is part of a unique series of images painted by artist Bryan Charnley, who had a diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia. Over the summer of 1991 Bryan made a deliberate attempt at self-investigation by using his art to express his changing state of mind under the influence of three different drug treatments prescribed for his condition. Sadly, Bryan died in July 1991 but he left us with an incredible insight into his thoughts and feelings.
