Deaf children face tremendous difficulties learning to read, write and communicate in the hearing world around them. They are more vulnerable to neglect, emotional, physical and sexual abuse.
- 1 million children (0-8 years) at any one time experience temporary deafness caused by 'glue ear'
- 840 babies are born with a significant permanent hearing loss every year
- 90% of deaf children are born into families with no previous experience of deafness
- 16% of permanent deafness may be acquired, progressive or of late onset
- The majority of deaf children leave mainstream school at the age of 16 with the reading abilities of a nine year old
