The National Deaf Children's Society

Deaf children face tremendous difficulties learning to read, write and communicate in the hearing world around them. They are more vulnerable to neglect, emotional, physical and sexual abuse.
  • 1 million children (0-8 years) at any one time experience temporary deafness caused by 'glue ear'
  • 840 babies are born with a significant permanent hearing loss every year
  • 90% of deaf children are born into families with no previous experience of deafness
  • 16% of permanent deafness may be acquired, progressive or of late onset
  • The majority of deaf children leave mainstream school at the age of 16 with the reading abilities of a nine year old
