The GSCC approves education and training courses for social workers by checking the quality of the training being offered by universities and colleges. This includes both qualifying and post-qualifying training.
Currently, more than eighty universities in England have been ‘licensed’ to offer the new degree in social work that will:
- build on the best of social work education and training;
- have a strong practical element and incorporate the need to develop analytical, recording, reporting and inter-agency working skills;
- be based on the views of people who use social care services; and
- improve the status of social workers.
The first degree courses began in Autumn 2003.
All social workers who have completed a recognised professional social work qualification are eligible to continue their learning by studying for a GSCC -recognised post-qualifying award. This enables them to improve their skills and, in some cases, begin to specialise in a particular area such as child care or mental health.

In February 2005 the GSCC launched the new post-qualifying (PQ) framework for social work education and training. Under the framework of PQ awards introduced in 2005, social workers can study for a university or college award which has been approved by the GSCC. The awards are available in different areas of practice.
