About the Commission
The Commission for Patient & Public Involvement in Health (CPPIH) was established by the NHS Reform and Healthcare Professions Act 2002 and set up in January 2003.
It is an independent, non-departmental public body, sponsored by the Department of Health.
Key Responsibilities
It is responsible for submitting reports to and advising the Government on how the Public and Patient Involvement (PPI) system is functioning.
It liaises with national bodies such as the Healthcare Commission on patient and public involvement issues, and makes recommendations to these bodies and the Department of Health.
It also gathers information and opinion from PPI Forums, in order to ensure that the bodies it reports to are acting upon patients' and the public's views.
The Board of Commissioners is responsible to the Secretary of State for Health for the performance of the CPPIH.
Regional Centres
The Regional Centres support and develop the work of the CPPIH locally and regionally and promote a well-supported system of public involvement based on local needs. They support the work of local Forums and oversee to work of Forum Support Organisations, (not for profit, voluntary organisations), which are independent of the NHS, and use their knowledge, experience and existing contacts within local communities to support PPI Forums.
The Commission for Patient and Public Involvement in Health is due to be abolished in 2007, subject to Act of Parliament, following the outcome of the Department of Health’s Strategic Review of PPI and accountability within the NHS.
