Sargent Cancer Care for Children

Sargent Cancer Care for Children

Every day five young people under 21 are diagnosed with cancer-related illnesses in the UK. Our mission is to ensure they and their families receive the practical help and emotional support they need.

All-Round Care From Day One

As soon as a family receives the devastating news that their child has cancer, Sargent's hospital-based Care Professional Teams swing into action to provide support. Our teams are spread throughout the UK at all the major cancer treatment centres. Sargent Social Workers are the mainstay of each team. All are child cancer care specialists, trained to carefully assess each child's needs. Their aim is to offer exactly the right kind of help, tailored to individual family situations.

Help is available in many forms.

Direct Grants
To families in financial need we give direct grants to cover anything from hospital visit expenses to home tuition.

Siblings Days for the brothers and sisters of young cancer patients we run events to help them understand what is happening at hospital and at home and give them the opportunity to meet other children in the same situation.

Family Support Schemes offer families help with all the practical chores at home such as cleaning, shopping and childminding, to relieve the pressure on parents and give them more time to care for their child that is ill. These schemes operate in Northern Ireland and South West England and more are in the pipeline.

Supported Short Breaks for families are available all year around at Malcolm Sargent House at Prestwick on the Ayrshire Coast

Young People's Workers are regionally-based specialists who counsel and befriend teenagers with cancer who face a unique set of problems when their independence is suddenly taken away from them and their ambitions are put on hold.

Grandparents Days
Recently launched, these pioneering workshops help senior members of the family to cope - practically and emotionally.

Play Specialists
At selected hospitals we employ staff to help children come to terms with their cancer and their treatment.
