About ASCL

Association of School and College Leaders

As well as providing top quality support for school and college leaders, ASCL strongly voices members’ opinions on a wide range of education policies. We are independent of all political parties and are widely thought of as one of the most credible and respected voices within education.

In our dealings with government ministers and departments, our primary aims are to put across the priorities and concerns expressed by members and to serve the best interests of schools and colleges.

ASCL’s current public policy agenda focuses primarily on the following:

  • Leadership of the school of the future, including autonomy and collaboration, sustainability of school leadership, the role of the local authority and extended schools.
  • Improved pay, conditions and workload of school leaders, linked to recruitment and retention of future school leaders.
  • 11-19 curriculum and assessment, recognising the need to broaden the scope from 14-19 and to embrace transition and the 11-14 age group.
  • Equitable funding for schools and colleges, pursuing the campaign for fair funding, both pre-16 and post-16.
  • Intelligent accountability and the new relationship, recognising that there are accountability issues, such as abolition of league tables, on which the case has not yet been won, and that the ‘new relationship with schools’ will need a strong steer in the right direction.

ACSL will continue to push the government on policies that benefit our members and allow them to focus their energies on raising student achievement.
