Policy Principles

4Children believes that the needs and interests of children, young people and families should be at the heart of our society.

Our vision for re-shaping support and services for our youngest citizens and their families is embodied in four key themes.
Creating Opportunities
Supporting Parents
Transforming Communities
Making it Happen

Creating Opportunities
We believe that every child and young person should be supported throughout their childhood by a range of community based services that empower them to realize their potential and their aspirations. Based in and around schools, we want to see the development of universal, integrated and co-ordinated services – from early years to out of school and youth, which provide children and young people with the space and capacity to learn, build relationships and develop the skills necessary to live healthy and enjoyable lifestyles.

Supporting Parents
We believe that parents and carers should be supported and valued for the crucial role they play in bringing up children. We recognise that all parents need help at some time – from practical help in finding work to support at more difficult times when problems arise.

Transforming Communities
We believe that communities benefit if they are able to provide support for children and families. We all benefit if children and young people are able to become active citizens in their community – engaged and involved in a neighborhood that they feel a sense of ownership over. Communities will flourish, socially and economically, if children and families come first.

Making it Happen
Putting children and families first nationally, means putting them at the heart of the way services are delivered locally. This means that every area needs to have a robust strategy for children that is joined up and co-ordinated. Such a strategy needs to meet the needs of all children but is especially important for more vulnerable children who need particular support. Joined up planning needs to lead to joined up delivery – through Children's Centres and Extended Schools – which bring together and enhance support for children and young people, to provide integrated services in every community. 4 Children is calling for centres in or around schools in every community, backed up by a new integrated children’s profession and an integrated children’s funding programme.
