Blunkett offers hints on pension strategy
David Blunkett has confirmed that the government will indicate its preferred solution to the pensions crisis next month.
The work and pensions secretary will hold a seminar near the end of June with Adair Turner, chairman of the Pensions Commission, which, "without providing a definitive answer" will give "some broad signals" about the direction.
Speaking to a National Association of Pension Funds conference, Blunkett said that by the time the commission reported formally in the autumn, people would "at least be familiar with the likely framework and direction" and have a "sense of the direction in which we are going".
Blunkett added that some combination of higher taxes, longer working lives and more saving would form the answer.
"Certainly, one of these will not do on its own. We are talking about how to you raise the money and at what point do you become eligible."
