No new money for nutritious school meals

Catering suppliers to local authorities have complained that government plans to improve the nutrition levels of school meals are not being backed by "hard cash".

Education secretary Ruth Kelly promised tougher action but her officials could not confirm her words would be matched by new money.

Under the plans schools would be subject to Ofsted inspections, and vocational qualifications are being brought in for caterers.
