Teaching English grammar in schools does not improve writing skills, according to a government-funded study published yesterday.

Professor Richard Andrews of York University, who led the review of 100 years of research into grammar lessons, said he found no evidence that teaching grammar helped pupils aged five to 16 to write more fluently or accurately.
