Pressure grows to abolish grammars

Tony Blair is facing calls from Labour backbenchers to soften the rules on parental ballots to make it easier to close grammar schools.

They want Labour to include the pledge in its manifesto for the next election and this week the Commons education committee will urge ministers to reduce the requirement that opponents of selection must gain the support of a fifth of local parents before a ballot can be held on the future of the 164 remaining grammar schools.
