Trinity Announcement
Sandra Osborne MP has voiced her concerns at the recent announcement by Trinity Newspapers of plans for extensive cuts across the whole of their UK operation.
She said:
‘I am growing increasingly concerned about the downgrading of our local and national newspapers by cuts in staff and the pooling of editorial responsibility away from the local area. I have raised my concerns with the owners of Trinity following representations from the National Union of Journalists who are concerned about possible job losses in newspapers which are already understaffed. I am concerned that the high quality and strong local identity we have come to expect from the Ayrshire Post will be undermined. This comes at a time when Trinity recently announced a 20% rise in operational profits, a 5.8 % increase in revenue and net saving of £23m. I have also pointed out to management that the Ayrshire Post should not be compromised to shore up other parts of their business which may be less successful. I have asked Trinity to rethink their present strategy which can only damage the editorial quality of the titles and circulation figures.
