Original Shoe Meeting Comment

Following the announcement of the closure of the Original Shoe office and warehouse in Cumnock Sandra Osborne, MP for Ayr, Carrick and Cumnock Constituency met with Mr David  Hammond on Friday 2 February 2007 to discuss the concerns about the impact of the closure of the Cumnock factory and the job losses in the area.

Sandra said:
‘The Original Shoe company was taken over by Sportsworld and following a downturn in sales by companies like Original Shoe due to competition by companies like Primark and Tesco it was decided to close the Cumnock office and warehouse.  But it appears to me that the Sportsworld owner did not intend to keep the company in Cumnock.

However, we must now look to the future and I had a constructive meeting with Mr Hammond on Friday 2 February.  Everything possible is being done to secure alternative employment and Cathy Jamieson and myself are working closely with East Ayrshire Council to pursue the bigger picture of what can be done to bring more jobs to the Cumnock area.’
