Sandra Osborne MP Opposes New Generation of Nuclear Weapons

Ayr, Carrick and Cumnock MP, Sandra Osborne has voted against the replacement of Trident with a new generation of nuclear weapons.

Sandra said,
' I voted against the renewal of Trident this week because I have always believed the very existence of nuclear weapons is a moral obscenity and we should be concentrating our efforts on multilateral disarmament now rather than committing the country to a new generation of nuclear weapons fifty years into the future.
The UK currently holds less than one per cent of the world's nuclear arsenal and we are signed up to seeking the total elimination of nuclear weapons under the Non Proliferation Treaty. If we are saying we must plan now to maintain nuclear weapons far into the future there is nothing to stop any other country which is not currently a member of the nuclear club from thinking they have the right to join it. I believe we need a debate about our country's role in the post Cold War world taking into account the global threats of terrorism, climate change, international development and energy supply. These are real challenges for the future which must be addressed along with multi lateral disarmament. We all want our grandchildren to have the chance to grow up in a more secure and peaceful world.
