Veterans’ Lapel Badge
Sandra Osborne MP is calling on those who served in HM Armed Forces up to and including 31 December 1969 to apply for an honorary veteran’s badge.
The veterans’ lapel badge was introduced to mark the 60th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. Originally it was introduced for service men and women who had served up to 31 December 1954 but it has proved so popular that eligibility was extended to those who served anytime up to 31 December 1969. The Veteran’s Badge has already been awarded to over 328,000 veterans and the Merchant Seafarers Badge has been awarded to over 3,000 recipients.
Following the extension of eligibility for the two badges, those that are entitled to apply include: Cyprus Regiment, Merchant Navy Seamen who took part in military action, Home Guard, Polish Forces under UK Command, those who served in Aden (1964-1967), Malaysia (1964-1966) and in Northern Ireland at the start of the troubles in 1969.
However, the criteria does not include Veterans who served in Armed Forces of other Countries and who served alongside HM Armed Forces. For example, the Canadian Navy or Royal Australian Air Force.
Sandra wants to encourage local veterans to apply for the badge to honour the contributions they have made.
Sandra said:
‘It is very important to remember the sacrifices made by every veteran. These badges will help recognise the invaluable contribution made by veterans and should be worn with real pride.
Any veteran within Ayr, Carrick and Cumnock Constituency who would like a badge and needs assistance in applying for one can contact my office and I will be pleased to help.’
Posthumous applications can also be made but can only be issued to either War Widows or Widowers receiving a War Widows or Widowers pension from the Veterans Agency. The deceased must have served before 31 December 1969.
Any veteran living in the constituency who would like a badge and needs assistance in applying for one can contact the Parliamentary Office on 01292 262906.
