Progress at Last on Canvey’s 3rd Road

‘Technically feasible, potentially financially viable and with considerable strategic significance’ – that’s Canvey’s 3rd road according to County Hall's specialist consultants, Mouchelpackman.    We could add that it is socially, economically and environmentally necessary and much needed for increased safety with rising sea levels.

The case for our road is compelling; the problem is how to fund it at £25 to £45 million depending on the type of bridge.    I don't like tolls; we pay for roads by taxes and motorists are hit too hard.    But the £100 million Dartford Crossing surplus could be used and the new Transport Innovation Fund offers money to tackle the sort of problems arising from Canvey's poor access.

As a start, I have asked the Regional Development Agency to help us by supporting a business case appraisal for our new road.    Another source of funds is the Thames Gateway which still badly needs to win public support and throwing its weight behind our new road would be a good start.   The Government should also help to fund the project as part of its strategic plans for the region, including the new Thames Gateway port.

The Saddlers Farm improvement is very welcome, but it comes a poor second to solving our congestion problems along the A13 through Tarpots and Hadleigh, and the need for our new access for Canvey.

I welcome County’s constructive 3rd road policy; they are now taking us seriously.   I know the new Canvey Council will work hard for Canvey.   They are mega-enthusiastic and just want what is best for Canvey.  They will drive the road consultation forwards; this campaign can be their first proving ground.

I am a humble politician; I will listen and learn from Canvey Council.   We will work together to develop a long term vision including our new access road, a new terminus rail station and a centre of excellence for sport and leisure at Waterside.  We must think big and aim high; the people of Canvey deserve no less.

Finally, if you need my help or advice, just ring me or write; I’ll do my best for you.  If you want to receive my email newsletters, please drop me a note: spinkr@parliament.uk     Please let me know if you want more details of the new '3rd Road Report'

PS   Could you give this another little boost please???

Let’s have some fun; come along to the charity PROMS night in my garden on Saturday 15th July, you'd be most welcome and among friends; it's informal and relaxed (well, I get very relaxed that evening!) please ring me for details.
