“This is a non-political campaign to let the people decide.
Some facts are irrefutable.
This Treaty is the old constitution.
The so called ‘Red Lines’ are written in sand. They are more a device to get Labour off the hook. than to defend our democracy.
The treaty hands over substantial additional powers from parliament, to people abroad who have little connection with, and no democratic accountability to, the British people.
Labour promised a referendum, in their manifesto, This was a basis for their re-election.
Without a referendum, the treaty would have no democratic legitimacy in the UK.
If Labour take the treaty through parliament on a whipped vote, this would show a total contempt for British people and for the defence of our democracy. Labour’s breathtaking dishonesty would harm every one of their candidates at the next election and haunt them for years in the future.
These comments apply equally to the Liberal Democrats.
I speak as a Conservative MP. The Conservative Party must be honest and straight forward on this.
They can not on one hand support the above facts, which they are currently vigorously doing.
But on the other hand refuse a referendum or renunciation of the Treaty, if it is ratified and they get into power.
That would be inconsistent and would bring politics into disrepute.
The People of Britain yearn for strong and honest leadership from Westminster
And never more so than on the issue of defending our very democracy.
This is not just a question of pro or anti EU
It is a question of truth and honesty in politics, respect for the people of Britain
And the defence of our sovereignty.
