MP calls for ‘common sense’ with refuse collections as bins, including her own, are not emptied

Warrington North MP HELEN JONES called on the LibDem/Tory administration at the borough council to show some common sense and tackle the growing problem of bins not being emptied around the town   because the lids are not firmly shut.

The MP has received many calls and letters on the subject and fell foul of the new council regulations herself.
She said:
“  The new regulations are simply daft.  I can understand there being a safety issue if the bin lid is wedged open by bags of rubbish but to refuse to empty a bin which is a centimetre from being closed flies in the face of common sense.  My own bin was shut except for an empty plastic bag which had been caught by the lid and was left unemptied.  There have been many other similar reports from my constituents.

“  I understand the refuse collectors have been instructed to leave any bin which is not completely shut.  This is stretching bureaucracy to its limits and is in my view madness.  Under normal circumstances to leave rotting rubbish in a bin for a week could constitute a health hazard – in the current heat wave it could result in serious environmental health problems.

“  The new LibDem/Tory leadership of the council needs to get a grip,  show some common sense and instruct the council officers to implement a sensible waste collection policy as a matter of urgency.  “
