Shopworkers thank Helen Jones for Sunday opening victory

Shopworkers in Warrington have been celebrating after the Government announced that Sunday opening hours will not be extended, following a review.

Warrington North MP HELEN JONES has been at the forefront of the campaign to enable retail staff to spend at least part of their Sundays with family and friends. She has spoken in the House and sponsored Early Day Motions on the issue as well as promoting the shopworkers union USDAW’s Keep Sunday Special campaign.

HELEN JONES said:

“ I have campaigned for a long time to keep Sunday special and am delighted that the six hour limit on Sunday opening remains in force.

“ It is important for all of us to have some time to relax with our loved ones. Lots of shopworkers in my constituency tell me that they already work evenings and weekends. This leaves Sunday as they only time they have to spend with friends and family. “ This is primarily a victory for hard-working staff and their families but I hope it will also help keep Sundays special for all of us. “

John Hannett, General Secretary of USDAW, has written to thank HELEN JONES for her support saying:

“ I would like to thank Helen Jones for listening to her constituents and acting on their behalf.

“ When USDAW asked retail staff, 94% opposed longer opening hours on Sundays. 80% of staff already have to work on Sundays, and over half of them are under pressure to work more.
“ Longer Sunday opening would have compelled more staff to work for longer to the detriment of their leisure and family time. Helen Jones has shown by her actions that she is a strong supporter of families. “
