Lifetime Homes offers independence to elderly, says MP

Stockport MP Ann Coffey has welcomed the government’s new “age-friendly” housing strategy, announced last month, and will visit her local B&Q store this week to see a new range of products which help older people stay comfortable and secure in their homes.

In its new housing strategy “Lifetime Homes”, the government recognises that older people want a real choice between staying in their own home as long as possible with improvements, or moving somewhere else.  Part of the strategy focuses on adapting homes as we age, with simple but important features being built into new homes, such as wider doors, staircases wide enough to take a stairlift, and improved bathroom design.

Most existing houses have not been built with an aging population in mind.  However, home safety modifications and adaptations can prevent falls and other accidents, and help older people keep their independence.  Aids such as walk-in baths and showers, long-handled taps, grab rails and electric plugs with handles can all help.

Ann Coffey said:  “Housing must meet the needs of older people, both now and in the future. When I talk to older people in Stockport they tell me they want to stay in their own homes for as long as possible. People want choice and independence.  Even a small age-friendly adaptation at home can make all the difference.”

To better support older people in their homes, the Lifetime Homes strategy also includes increased funding through the Disabled Facilities Grant to help people make home adaptations; and a new housing advice service to provide expert advice for older people about their accommodation needs.
