MP sees plans to bring Royal Oak Brewery back to life as new homes
Stockport MP Ann Coffey will meet Equity Housing Group on Friday to view the redevelopment of the disused Royal Oak Brewery building in Hillgate.
The project will bring new homes to the town centre, with fifty-one flats planned as a result of renovating the old brewery. All the flats will be sold through shared ownership, which means that a first time buyer can purchase 50% or 75% of the property, and pay rent to the housing association on the rest. This is one good way to make new homes affordable, and Equity Housing Group already has many shared ownership schemes in Stockport, with a scheme of family houses currently being built in Brinnington.
The demolition work on the Royal Oak site is almost complete, and the architect has designed the accommodation to keep some of the historic character of the old building. Completion is scheduled for Spring 2009.
Ann Coffey said:
“It is great to see old buildings being brought back into use for new homes. Shared ownership schemes are a good way for people to get a foot on the property ladder. I hope the Royal Oak scheme will help first-time buyers in Stockport.”
Peter Glover, Development Director at Equity Housing said:
“We are looking forward to showing Ann the architect’s plans for the new flats. We are still at quite an early stage of the project, and it’s a good opportunity for the MP to see how the development will fit into the character of the old brewery.”
