Second Chamber of Parliament Bill (Failed Bill 2004/05 Session)
The Bill, brought forward by Paul Tyler (Lib Dem, North Cornwall) sought to end hereditary peers sitting in the House of Lords, ultimately leading to a second elected government chamber.
Commenting at the launch of the Bill, which was attended by senior MPs and peers from all parties, Paul Tyler praised breadth and depth of support received, and urged the government to capitalise on the consensus.
“The reform consensus has been found and the legislative drafting has even been done for him. What more can Tony Blair want? Let him now commit the government to a free vote – soon – on our Bill,” he said.
