Manifesto

The Royal British Legion

The Legion answers more than 300,000 calls for help during the year

Caring
Our seven nursing and residential homes looked after more than 400 people at any one time. 4,200 patients enjoyed rest and recovery in our three homes for welfare breaks.

Guiding
More than 41,750 men and women obtained free advice and help in recovering an estimated £15 million pension entitlement which they otherwise might not have claimed.

Supporting
Legion funds ensured that 30,000 much needed visits were made to those who were either housebound or in hospital.

Helping
346 severely handicapped people were given the chance to enjoy a well deserved holiday. Remembrance Travel organized visits to 22 countries and took some 800 pilgrims, mainly war widows, to war cemeteries as far afield as Burma and Libya. 350 school children and 1400 army training regiment recruits also visited war graves.

Giving
More than £9.5 million was given in grants to those in need.

Employing
Some 3,000 mainly ex-Service men and women were employed by the Legion and its related companies. A quarter are registered disabled.

Advising
Our small business loan and advice service celebrated 16 years of success and lent around £375,000 to ex Service people to start their own businesses. Around 1,500 people were helped to find a job.

Campaigning
The Legion campaigned on ex-Service issues, notably those associated with anomalies related to war pensions.

We actively encouraged the Government to help those suffering from Gulf War illnesses.

We successfully supported the former prisoners of war of the Japanese in their campaign for compensation in recognition of the suffering endured during and after captivity.
