A unique UK charity marks a remarkable achievement today – the provision of aid for half a million disaster victims worldwide.

Rotary Flood Disaster Appeal Reaches £80,000

Rotary Clubs across the country have responded to the national Rotary Flood Disaster Appeal set up in response to the devastation caused by the recent flooding. Appeals were set up initially by Rotary in Yorkshire and Gloucestershire but when other areas became affected, a central appeal was launched with a separate fund. To date Rotarians have responded magnificently, both in service and fund raising and more than £80,000 has been raised. Specific examples have been Rotarians working with first responders, filling sand bags, helping in community halls with social services, looking after those displaced from their homes, cleaning and flushing toilets with buckets of water, collecting and laundering people’s clothes, distributing bottled water, essential food supplies and fuel. Rotarians have also housed displaced persons and are now heavily involved in clean up projects.

Polio immunization campaign to protect nearly 5 million children in north of Sudan
Additional effort comes in face of polio case reported in neighbouring Chad
Khartoum, 5 August 2007. An estimated 4.9 million children across the north of Sudan will be targeted in a special round of polio immunization starting on Monday 6 August. Led by the Ministry of Health and backed by UNICEF, WHO and other partners, the three day campaign to protect children against the virus comes in response to reports of polio being discovered in neighbouring Chad.

Rotary Clubs win a £175,000 grant for malaria project in Tanzania

The Rotary Clubs of The Island & Royal Manor of Portland in the UK and Arusha in Tanzania  have been awarded a 3H Grant from the Rotary Foundation worth in total £175,000  to support the Rotarians Eliminating Malaria in Tanzania (REMIT) project.
This grant matches funds raised by Rotary Clubs in Great Britain and Ireland.

Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland welcomes the announcement by the Chancellor of the Exchequer, The Rt Hon Gordon Brown, on the International Finance Facility for Immunisation (IFFIm). The IFFIm will deliver 4 billion dollars over the next ten years to be spent on the immunisation of up to 500 million children in the world’s 70 poorest countries against preventable diseases like polio, measles and diphtheria. It is estimated this will save 5 million lives in the years up to 2015, and a further 5 million afterwards, and lead to the eradication of polio.

ROTARY CLUBS ASIAN DISASTER FUND RAISING REACHES £5 MILLION

Funds raised by Rotary Clubs in Great Britain and Ireland for the Asian Disaster survivors have reached £5 million. Rotary Clubs responded quickly and continue to work tirelessly to assist communities affected by the earthquake and tsunami that devastated south Asia’s coastal regions on December 26.

ROTARY AID REACHES SRI LANKA AND INDIA

Rotary Clubs in Great Britain and Ireland have responded to the Asian Tsunami disaster by raising funds for Shelterboxes and Aquaboxes, in response to requests from Rotary Clubs in Sri Lanka, Indonesia and India. Eight hundred Aquaboxes and five hundred Shelterboxes have been shipped to India and Sri Lanka  in the last week to provide temporary homes and clean water for 10,000 victims of the Asian Tsunami.

ROTARY WORLD SENDS RELIEF TO VICTIMS OF IRAN QUAKE

Rotary clubs across the world are rallying to the aid of the victims of the devastating earthquake that flattened Bam, Iran, on the night of 26 December 2003. More than 30,000 residents of the 2,000-year-old city were killed and some 80,000 left homeless by the disaster.

ROTARY PARTNERSHIP WITH ACH OFF TO FLYING START WITH £150,000 RAISED

The partnership between Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland and the Association of Children’s Hospices announced in July has got off to a flying start. Rotary Clubs have participated in many fund raising events and in the first five months more than £150,000 has been donated by clubs to various hospices in Great Britain and Ireland. In addition Rotarians are giving hundreds of man hours each week at local hospices. Many Rotary Clubs organised events over the Christmas period, the Rotary Club of Windsor St George for example, had a wonderful Christmas concert which raised in the region of £3,500.

BUTTERFLY TEA PARTIES PLANNED FOR CHILDREN'S HOSPICES WEEK

Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland announced today that it's clubs are planning Butterfly Tea Parties on Wednesday 24th September in support of the Association of Children's Hospices. Rotary Clubs are organising Butterfly Tea Parties in their communities to mark Children's Hospice Week. The butterfly is used by the Association of Children's Hospices to signify the short, fragile, beautiful lives of the children in the UK who have a condition which means they will not reach adulthood. Tea parties are being arranged in church halls, schools, sports and social clubs, offices, community centres and private homes for friends and colleagues.

GUINNESS WORLD RECORD FOR BLOOD PRESSURE READINGS

GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS has confirmed that Rotary International in Great Britain & Ireland and The Stroke Association have been successful in setting a new Guinness World Record for the number of blood pressure readings taken in one day. The official announcement coincides with the start of National Blood Pressure Testing Week and comes two weeks before The Stroke Association's annual Stroke Awareness Week which starts on Monday

NEW PRESIDENT OF ROTARY HIGHLIGHTS NEW OPPORTUNITIES FOR HUMANITARIAN SERVICE AT HOME AND ABROAD

The new President of Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland is Brian Stoyel from Plymouth. On July 1st he became the leader of some 59,000 Rotarians who belong to 1,835 clubs in Great Britain and Ireland. Brian's priorities for the next twelve months are the children's hospices movement at home, and two overseas projects in Tanzania and Uganda. In 2003/2004 Rotary clubs will be asked to focus on these three new areas of support: Association of Children's Hospices; Rotarians Eliminating Malaria in Tanzania and Rotaract Overseas Projects, in Tanzania to construct a community centre, and in Uganda to build a School Clinic.

ROTARY RAISES US$88 MILLION TO FIGHT POLIO

As part of Rotary's 20-year commitment to end polio by its 100th anniversary in 2005, the humanitarian service organization has announced that its 1.2 million members have successfully raised over US$88 million; surpassing its original goal of US$80 million.

RECORD NUMBER OF BLOOD PRESSURE CHECKS IN ONE DAY!

Rotary Clubs in Great Britain and Ireland organized a record number of free blood pressure checks on Saturday April 5th , in communities throughout the country. More than 130,000 people had their blood pressure taken by qualified medical staff, courtesy of Rotary International in support of The Stroke Association. President Tony de St Dalmas made the announcement at the RIBI annual conference in Blackpool.

TAKE A WINTER WALK TO HELP THOSE WHO CAN'T
Rotary to Mobilise a Million Walkers in Service Week in February

Members of Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland will be urging their communities to take a winter walk in week commencing 23rd February, 2003. Each walker will be asked to pay £1 subscription for the global polio eradication programme. The walk is not intended to be a marathon but a short walk of up to three miles; this could be around a public park, a school playing field, a football ground or even indoors on a treadmill! Local Rotarians hope to enlist the support of schools, sports clubs, church groups, youth groups, local organizations, families and friends.
