NESTA and Government Priorities

"I want to concentrate on an organisation that should feature more prominently in the Executive's thinking. NESTA, the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts...it is driven by the belief that creativity is vital to a nation and that talent needs nurturing...Most heartening is that NESTA's stated aim is to take risks, which is why I believe that the initiative is to be welcomed. Its mandate is to be adventurous and daring and it is prepared to invest in marginal activity on the premise that even though some projects will fail, more will succeed, and that that success will more than compensate.

I have focused on NESTA because it fulfils the aims that are vital in public investment to nurture new creativity in business. First, it gives long-term support. Secondly, it is risk-taking rather than risk-averse. Thirdly, it is self-funding in the short term. Fourthly, it seeks out innovation and fills the gaps in existing provision. Fifthly, it offers targeted and measurable support."

Nick Johnston MSP (Mid Scotland and Fife) during The Scottish Parliament's debate on The Creative Economy, 27 September 2000
NESTA's funding programmes help to achieve some important strategic priorities for various Government departments and agencies across the UK. We help join up some of the work of Government Departments within and across the nations, working with the DCMS, DTI, DfES, the Scottish Executive, Scottish Enterprise, the National Assembly for Wales and the Departments of Culture, Arts and Leisure and of Enterprise and Trade and Investment in Northern Ireland.
