Institute of Directors (IOD)

Handbook for success

IoD publishes essential ‘toolkit’ for the modern director

17 October 2005

Company directors now can now turn to an indispensable ‘one-stop shop’ guide on the ins and outs of running a business. The single volume manual published by the Institute of Directors (IoD) sets out the duties, responsibilities and liabilities of being an executive in the Twenty First Century.

Published in association with International Law Firm, Pinsent Masons and endorsed by the Department of Trade and Industry the Directors’ Handbook is the definitive source of information and guidance on all aspects of corporate governance.

IoD Director General, Miles Templeman, said:

“Providing information and guidance to directors is at the heart of the work of the IoD. As the UK’s premier provider of training and development to directors including our Chartered Director qualification we are committed to raising the standards of UK directors, from start-up businesses to global companies.”

Less a legal text book, more an accessible resource of advice and best practice for people who face real issues in their daily lives, the handbook includes numerous case studies, top tips and essential contact details. The guide also includes up-to-the-minute information on subjects such as the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, directors’ remuneration and corporate social responsibility.

Miles Templeman, said:

”It is important for the prosperity and competitiveness of UK business that those running it are up to the task, and do not inadvertently fall foul of the law or standards of best practice. Ultimately, well-directed companies have a much greater chance of success.”

What business leaders have already been saying about the Director’s Handbook:

  • “Easy to read, this is the sort of book I like, and sad as it may sound, I’d take it to bed with me! If I had read this book 10 years ago, it would have saved me a lot of heartache in the interim.”
    Simon Woodroffe
Founder of YO! Sushi & YO! Everything Else

  • "The role and responsibilities of being a director - whether executive or non-executive - are often misunderstood and underestimated. This handbook is the ideal guide to all directors to help them understand what is expected of them, and the risks they are taking on when accepting the role."
    Martin Broughton
    Chairman, British Airways

  • "It is typical of the IoD to give us a simple and up to date summary of the rules affecting directors. It has helpful advice on everything from board composition to the new FSA rules on disclosure. Companies large and small are struggling to do their best amidst the red tape of corporate governance and this is a helpful guide to the highways and byways of this important field."
    Lucy Neville-Rolfe
Company Secretary/Corporate & Legal Affairs Director, Tesco

  • "No board can function effectively if its members lack the basic skills and knowledge required to discharge their responsibilities,"
    Alan Johnson
Secretary of State for Trade and Industry

  • "The IoD's handbook is the directors' bible. No director should leave home without it,"
    Sir Derek Higgs
Author of the 2003 Review of the Role non-executive directors
