Engineering at the Olympics

The Engineering and Technology Board (etb)

As the countdown to the Olympic Games in Athens begins, the Engineering and Technology Board (etb), in a unique partnership with the British Olympic Association (BOA), is profiling the engineering technology that supports so much of the excellence and achievement that we see in Olympic sport and sporting events.

The etb has created a national promotional campaign entitled Engineering in the Olympics as a way of attracting the best minds of a new and current generation into the diverse and exciting science, engineering and technology sector. The campaign is running in various forms throughout 2004.

Engineering in the Olympics highlights issues which range from human performance and the latest training technology to the critical debates over sustainability, transport and urban regeneration in Olympic host cities.

The campaign itself features:
  • A national student engineering design award scheme run in conjunction with the RSA, with an award ceremony taking place in July 2004.

  • A national schools lecture tour which kicked off on 25 February at the National Science Museum, London, and is run in association with the Institute of Physics.

  • A series of expert debates held at venues around the country on four key topics surrounding the Olympic Games and engineering:
- Sports infrastructure.
- Human performance.
- Transportation.

Two of these debate programmes will be launched in May and June before the Athens Olympic Games begin in the summer of 2004.

Information on the campaign is regularly updated on the campaign website: www.engineeringintheolympics.com, as the etb, together with the BOA, gears up to supporting our British athletes as they prepare for the 2004 Olympics.
