What will be the route for Crossrail line 1?

The Crossrail line 1 core route will run from Stratford and the Isle of Dogs(Canary Wharf) in the East through Paddington and on to Richmond andKingston, and via Ealing Broadway on to Heathrow and points further West.The Government is now in the process of deciding which of these options itprefers.

As well as running to Heathrow, shortlist options to the west include linesto Reading, Aylesbury and Watford. In the east, the shortlist containsroutes to Brentwood (Shenfield) and Ebbsfleet - the latter via theIsle of Dogs or via Charlton.

We continue to be involved in discussions on these options with localauthorities and other key stakeholders.

Following an announcement by Alistair Darling, Secretary of State forTransport, we will then be conducting a full public consultation along thepreferred route prior to submitting a Hybrid Bill to the House of Commonslater in 2003.

How was the shortlist drawn up?

Following six months of careful analysis of all route options the shortlisted routes were selected on the basis of their engineering and operational feasibility as well as how well the schemes meet the economic and transport objectives set out by the Crossrail Board.

What will be the route for Crossrail line 2?

Crossrail line 2 will run between Victoria and King's Cross with stations at these locations and a station at Tottenham Court Road which will interchange with Crossrail line 1.

North of King's Cross, it is likely to go towards Hackney, probably via Dalston. To the south west it is likely to go to Wimbledon.

How much will Crossrail line 1 cost?

The construction cost for Crossrail line 1 is likely to be in the region of£7bn to £11bn depending on which options are finally preferred. It is notpossible to give a total cost at this stage as the routes, service patternsor rolling stock have yet to be determined.

How will Crossrail line 2 be funded?

Crossrail is currently examining a number of funding structures.

When will the line open?

It is envisaged that Crossrail line 1 will open by 2012. This will be a staged opening with new sections coming into service as work is completed.
