About BUPA

BUPA - British United Provident Association

Background

BUPA began in 1947 as the British United Provident Association, when prior to the formation of the NHS, seventeen provident associations joined together in order to provide quality health care for the general public.Man in hospital

As a provident association, BUPA has no shareholders to pay. This means that any surpluses can be reinvested to provide better health and care services for our customers.

Fifty years later BUPA has become the leading independent health and care organisation in the UK and has a growing international presence, with members in 190 countries.

In the UK

It is a popular misconception that BUPA is just a health insurance company. BUPA has a wide portfolio of health and care services for both individuals and the corporate market.

BUPA has 35 hospitals throughout the UK providing a range of specialist and general care. BUPA also opened the first privately run Diagnostic and Treatment centre dedicated to NHS patients in Surrey.

As the UK’s largest provider of care homes BUPA has 246 care homes providing high quality 24 hour nursing, residential and respite care.

BUPA’s range of insurance products and services include medical insurance, critical illness and travel insurance.

BUPA Teddies runs 42 nurseries throughout the UK providing care for children between three months and five years old. BUPA can also provide childcare and advice to families through Children@heart and to employers, through Children@work.

BUPA Wellness runs a network of 34 health screening centres and also provides corporate services including occupational health and musculoskeletal medicine.
