The AAT offers open-access, structured career-progression from NVQ level 2 to AAT full membership at NVQ level 4, supported by a continuing professional development (CPD) scheme.
AAT Qualifications
Lifelong learning and CPD
Those qualified with the AAT are also eligible for exemptions from foundation stage exams of all of the UK chartered accountancy bodies – CIPFA, ICAEW, CIMA, ICAS and ACCA – as well as a number of other financial and non-financial chartered institutes.
In addition, a number of UK universities recognise the AAT’s Accounting Qualification for the purposes of degree-entry; offering a range of exemptions to appropriately qualified candidates.

AAT Accounting Qualification
- Foundation – NVQ in Accounting, level 2
- Intermediate – NVQ/SVQ in Accounting, level 3
- Technician – NVQ/SVQ in Accounting, level 4
AAT Bookkeeping Certificate (ABC)
- VRQ in Bookkeeping, level 2
Payroll Administration
- NVQ/SVQ in Payroll Administration, level 2
- NVQ/SVQ in Payroll Administration, level 3
Diploma in Government Finance

Lifelong learning and CPD
Skills development does not end on completion of an AAT qualification. An active framework of lifelong learning supports all AAT members and their employers, with the AAT offering a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) scheme.
This continued learning plays an essential role in developing and maintaining practical and technical skills. The AAT’s CPD courses and branch network offer a range of low cost or free training, development and networking opportunities – helping individuals to develop their technical, business and interpersonal skills.
