Figures to show rise in homelessness

Ministers have been pushed onto the defensive by figures showing a rise in the number of homeless families.

Figures for England are today expected to confirm that over 100,000 families are now without permanent accommodation.

However, the government is expected to say that over three quarters of homeless families are living in good quality temporary homes.

Deputy prime minister John Prescott is set to announce details of an extra £150 million to help the 500,000 homeless people.

Some £90 million will go on improving hostels for homeless people.

And a further £60 million will be given to local councils and the voluntary sector to deliver frontline services.
