Unions threaten strike action over pension plans

As many as five million public sector workers will go on strike in the new year unless the government abandons its plans for pension reform.

Under the change, the working age for civil servants would be raised from 60 to 65, while payouts would be based upon an average, rather than a final, salary.

Despite protests from public sector unions, Cabinet Office minister Ruth Kelly insisted that the new deal will be fairer for members of staff.
