Data points to upbeat economic outlook

The number of businesses operating at the start of 2003 was up by a record 200,000 on the previous year, upbeat figures revealed yesterday.

In a separate survey, the CBI said manufacturing order books were recovering strongly.

However, there were signs that the housing boom could be over.

The number of new mortgages being approved by banks fell by a fifth last month.
