An extension of a deal to end the "two tier workforce" across the public sector looks more certain, after the CBI dropped its opposition to the move.

"We hope this will help remove ideological opposition to the involvement of business in the public services," said a CBI spokesman.

The move offers the government a chance to repair its relationship with the large public sector unions.
