Treasury inflates information charges

The Treasury has been accused of effectively sabotaging the Freedom of Information Act by charging prohibitive fees to find documents.

The department is charging between £50 and £575 to research information.

The fees are up to 1,000 per cent higher than ministers estimated when the Act was passed.

The hike appears to be motivated by fears of a deluge of applications.
