The pension protection fund, for people whose savings were lost through the collapse of their company, is aimed at providing "assistance", the Department for Work and Pensions said yesterday.

It was argued that the £400m they had earmarked to help former employees would not provide full compensation.

Ministers will be warned by the Liberal Democrats today that there is a £2 billion black hole in their proposals.
