The Conservatives have called for accident data to be published for every stretch of road covered by a speed camera, to determine whether the camera is actually needed.

"The public have lost faith in the way speed limits are being enforced on our roads," said shadow transport secretary Theresa May.

"People believe that there is a war on the motorist, and that speed cameras are being used to raise money, not as safety measures."
