Revenue merger to cause 3,000 job losses

Treasury permanent secretary Gus O'Donnell has admitted that only a small proportion of the 14,000 jobs to be axed from the Inland Revenue and Customs and Excise would come from a proposed merger of the two departments.

Speaking to a committee of MPs, he admitted that most of the savings were instead attributable to the Gershon efficiency review and existing plans.
