Cameron apologises over school claim

David Cameron has apologised to the Commons over claims made last week that two schools had links to Islamic group Hizb ut-Tahir.

Last week during prime minister's questions, the Conservative leader claimed the schools had secured £113,000 of government money and, of the funds, some were from a Pathfinder scheme whose objective was to prevent violent extremism.

But it later emerged the Pathfinder fund in question was one for helping parents find nursery places.

Cameron admitted an error had been made in his original statement, but did stand by the claims relating to an inappropriate use of taxpayers money.

Speaking during a Commons debate on Afghanistan troops, Cameron told MPs: "Can I start by putting right something I got wrong last week.

"While the two Islamic schools I mentioned got government money while being run by people linked to the extremist group Hizb ut-Tahrir, and while they did receive that money under a Pathfinder scheme, it was not the Pathfinder scheme concerned with combating extremism."

He added: "I am sorry for the error. I believe that when you get a fact wrong you should put it right but I continue to believe that it is wrong that taxpayers' money goes to schools run by extremists."
