Clients helpcelebrate Shaw Trusts milestone
Clients supported by a charitys servicesin the North East are joining in a countrywide celebration of its 21st birthdayyear, which coincides with the European Year for Disabled People. Trainees atthe Shaw Trust Grangefield Project in Stockton were happy to pose forphotographs and help celebrate the birthday of a national charity, whichstarted with just one Shaw Trust officer in 1982. Shaw Trust now has over 700staff and provides training and work opportunities for over 11,000 disabled anddisadvantaged people in the United Kingdom each year.
The Shaw Trust Grangefield Project is based at BishoptonRoad, Stockton, and is jointly funded by Stockton Borough Council and theEuropean Social Fund. It is a horticultural Work Preparation and EmploymentScheme, combining practical skills and training in a safe environment, wherepeople can gain the confidence to prepare them for work. The project producesflowers, hanging baskets and garden furniture, and in partnership with Stocktonand Billingham College, is also an accredited training centre for Asdan andEdexcel Work Preparation Awards. Since inception, over 100 clients have beenreferred to the project, with 49 currently attending.
For the 21st Birthday year,Shaw Trust will be holding anniversary events across its 120 plus projects andinitiatives all over the country, as well as a host of national eventsthroughout the year. Shaw Trust is committed to further developing its servicesin 2003, and continuing to campaign for a positive move towards equalemployment opportunities for over onemilliondisabled and disadvantaged people in the UK who want to work.
