Commenting on the Governments new valueadded league tables for primary schools, Doug McAvoy, NUT General Secretary, said:
The Governments continuing attachment toperformance tables is incomprehensible. Value added tables shuffle the winnersand losers without addressing the fundamental flaws behind the tables in thefirst place.
A school can receive a glowing inspectionreport and yet be at the bottom of the tables and suffer as a result. Thetables do not tell anyone about the quality of education provided in a schooland the added value element does not change that situation.
The Government continues to ignore thefact that in Wales and Scotland there are no league tables and education hasnot fallen apart. Parents continue to receive good and accurate informationabout the quality of education in their schools and the progress of theirchildren.
