Saltley physiotherapist suspended from Register

A Physiotherapist from Saltley, Birmingham has been suspended from the Register for 12 months by the Health Professions Council (HPC).

A panel of the Conduct and Competence Committee of the HPC met yesterday to hear the case of Naveed Khan. The allegation was heard that his fitness to practise as a registered health professional was impaired by reason of his lack of competence in that between 10.02.03 and 12.02.03 he failed to perform a level expected,
particulars of which are as follows:

He demonstrated poor handling skills
He demonstrated poor communication skills
He demonstrated lack of awareness
He were unable to write comprehensive notes

and
Mr. Khan's fitness to practise as a registered health professional is impaired by reason of his lack of competence whilst in the employ of Tendring NHS Primary Care Trust.

Keith Ross, Chair of the Panel said....."We are satisfied that Mr Kahn's standards of performance fell short of those expected of a registered physiotherapist. His standards also fell short of those expected of a registered Physiotherapist as set out in HPC's Standards of Conduct, Performance and Ethics and Standards of Proficiency for Physiotherapists.

"We have carefully considered all the sanctions available to us and we have had regard to the registrant that any sanction we impose should be proportionate. However, because of the seriousness of the allegations, which we have concluded are well founded, we have come to the conclusion that the only means by which the public can be adequately protected is to make a suspension order for a period of one year."

The Health Professions Council is a UK-wide health regulator set up to protect the public. It sets standards for twelve health professions. The HPC only registers people who meet its standards for their professional skills, behaviour and health, and will take action against people who do not.

While he is suspended from the HPC Register, Naveed Khan cannot practise anywhere in the UK using the protected title 'physiotherapist'.
